LHHS Ensembles

Information about the Ensembles offered at Lake Howell High School.

Silver Regiment

The Silver Regiment is the marching band of Lake Howell High School. This ensemble is the combined membership of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensembles, Jazz Band, and Color Guard.

With an annual membership of over 120 students, the Silver Regiment is a musical marching unit organized to provide artistic and entertaining performances for football games, parades, pep rallies, concerts and competitions.

As per state standards and guidelines, membership in the Silver Regiment is required of all students involved in the Lake Howell Band Program. It is an integral part of instrumental music education at Lake Howell and requires total dedication, commitment and involvement in all aspects.

The Silver Regiment rehearses on Mondays from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Wednesdays from 2:30 – 5:30 P.M.

Additional weekly rehearsals take place for members in the Color Guard and Percussion section, and members of the Woodwind and Brass may have additional “rotating” rehearsals after school throughout the fall.

Please read the Band Handbook for specifics regarding all aspects of the Lake Howell Band Program.

Color Guard

The Silver Regiment Color Guard is the non-musical section that provides the strongest visual support to the marching band’s performance. The color guard interprets the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, sabres, rifles, other pieces of equipment, and through contemporary dance.

Components of the Silver Regiment color guard include movement, visual effect, fluidity of choreography with the music, coordination of all members, marching the drill, and the use of equipment (e.g. flags, rifles, and sabres).

After marching season is over, the color guard begins an indoor, competitive season as the Silver Regiment Winterguard. The winterguard competes in the FFCC and WGI Circuits.

More information about The Silver Regiment Color Guard can be found in the Color Guard Contract.

Silver Regiment Color Guard Practice Schedule

  • Mondays from 5:30pm-8:30pm (with the band)
  • Tuesdays from 3:30pm-6:30pm (sectionals)
  • Wednesdays from 2:30pm-5:30pm (with the band)

Winter Guard

Winterguard brings music to life through performance in a competitive format. Unlike color guard, which performs outdoors on a football field (and is part of the marching band), winter guard is performed indoors, in a gym or indoor arena, during the winter season.

Winterguard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. It is an exciting world of performance and entertainment; a place where pageantry involves an array of equipment, movement, and skill.

The winterguard competes in the FFCC and WGI Circuits.

Wind Ensemble

The Lake Howell Wind Ensemble is the premiere concert band of the Lake Howell High School Band Program. Students are accepted into this ensemble by audition only.

This ensemble is comprised of primarily upper classmen who strive to excel in instrumental music. In addition, it is expected that all of the students of this ensemble participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Students are encouraged to audition for All-County and All-State Bands. The band literature that this ensemble performs is advanced and private lessons are strongly suggested. Each student is required to own and use a tuner and metronome for daily practice.

Students will be graded on participation, playing tests, and written tests. The Lake Howell Wind Ensemble participates in FBA District and State Concert Band Festivals. The Lake Howell Band Program is proud that the Wind Ensemble consistently receives superior ratings at FBA District Concert Festivals.

Note: All ensembles perform in concerts put on by the Lake Howell Band Program. Typically, the Band Program performs a Winter Concert, Pre-Festival Concert, and the “Shades of Silver” Spring Concert. In addition, ensembles will perform in adjudicated FBA Festivals. These events are mandatory and dates for these events will be given far in advance.

Festivals and Concerts should be made a priority and students and parents should not schedule ANY other events for those dates. Failure to do so may result in the expulsion of the student from the Lake Howell Band Program. Only family emergencies will be excused.

Symphonic Band

The Lake Howell Symphonic Band is the second concert band of the Lake Howell Band Program. This ensemble is comprised of mostly under classmen and audition is not required for this band.

The band literature that this ensemble performs is dependant on the level of the group and private lessons are strongly suggested. Students are encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Also, students are encouraged to audition for All-County and All-State Bands. Each student is encouraged to own and use a metronome and tuner for their daily practice.

Students will be graded on participation, playing tests, and written tests. The Lake Howell Symphonic Band participates in FBA District Concert Band Festival when instrumentation permits.
